Learning outcomes

The course intends to provide students with those elements necessary for an understanding of the relationship between written texts and their figurative apparatus or book ornamentation, an evaluation of both the aesthetic characteristics and the didactic functions of illustrations, and a formulation of stylistic appraisal. Therefore, an historical outline of Western book illustration and decoration, from late antiquity to modern times, from the manuscript to the printed book, will be followed. The course will introduce notions on the procedures of illustrating techniques and will pay particular attention to the specialised lexicon in various European languages. The examples of stylistic reading will concern illustrated and miniated books, as well as printed books, from the 1400s up to modern and contemporary times.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment will be by oral exam.
