Short description of contents:
Since the late 1960s a large number of choreographers and performers have drawn inspiration from Beckett’s universe. At the same time, a growing number of studies are dealing with the traces of dance and choreographic patterns in Beckett’s work as writer of prose and verse, playwright and director. After a brief introduction to this eminently interdisciplinary field of research, this article focuses on the proximity to choreography of Beckettian works belonging to various literary genres and dating from after the early 1970s. It also offers an overview of the dance performances that, in many different ways, connect with these works, followed by a case study concerning Al Segno (2000), a piece for six dancers co-signed by French choreographer François Raffinot with his collaborator Emmanuelle Vo-Dinh and composer Yan Maresz. Calling upon three main sources (Va-et-vient/Come and Go, Sans/Lessness and Compagnie/Company) and establishing with the late phase of Beckett’s work a complex relationship, where conceptual, imaginative and gestural influences converge, Al Segno illustrates not only the way in which Beckett’s art leads choreographers and performers to rethink the practice of dance at the same time as it constitutes a reservoir of postures and procedures, but also the way in which a danced reaction reactivates, in bodily, proprioceptive and kinaesthetic terms, our reception of Beckett’s texts.
