Doctorate research program

My research project focuses on climate change discourse, in particular, on the relationship between the British press and the reports produced by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) from a multimodal standpoint. Taking the ineffability and complexity of this global phenomenon as points of departure to examine its discursive construction, the study reflects on the difficultc communicative chain between the scientific community, the news and the lay public across the verbal and visual plane. The categories of epistemic modality and (visual) validity are then adopted to map out how the news media in the UK  multimodally chooses to construe climate change in the face of its scientific basis. To complete the analysis and provide further insights into why the news may employ certain strategies, the study also proposes an examination of new values and an in-depth crtitical discourse analysis.
