Body 'Magic': Angela Carter's Corporeal Materialism through Science and Religon
My project investigates Angela Carter’s representation of the flesh at the intersection of scientific and religious discourses. Moving beyond traditional psychoanalytic and socio-political readings, it argues that Carter subverts both scientific rationalisation and religious mortification of materiality to dismantle Western mind/body and soul/body dichotomies. Through a transdisciplinary posthuman, feminist, and new materialist framework, this project analyses The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972) and The Passion of New Eve (1977) as primary texts to uncover how Carter reanimates the material body as a site of vital relationality. This project thus wishes to demonstrate how Carter's narrative corporeality challenges the very epistemological systems that have historically produced and regulated the Western body.
