Doctorate research program
My research project deals with word formation in South-Bavarian varieties spoken in northern Italy, with special focus on derivational morphology in the dialect of South Tyrol. The prototypical Bavarian verbal prefix 'der-' (e. g. 'derfrieren', German 'erfrieren' "freeze to death") seems to be particularly frequent and prosperous in those varieties, especially with regard to its modal meaning component (e. g. dergehen "manage to walk"), which has no corresponding prefix in standard German (cfr. German 'be-/ent-/er-/ver-/zer-gehen'). Using theoretical and empirical tools (e.g. digital corpora, questionnaire), the aim of the project will be to increase the number of South-Bavarian data, trying to find a theoretical explanation for the development of the prefix's modal meaning component and to locate it in the syntactic structure.
