Davide Di Maio ha insegnato presso l'Università degli Studi di Palermo e la HafenCity-Universität di Amburgo. Attualmente è ricercatore (Rtdb) di Letteratura tedesca presso questo ateneo. Il 31.05.2021 ha conseguito l'Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN) per le funzioni di Professore di II Fascia (SSD L/LIN 13 – Letteratura tedesca).

I suoi interessi e i suoi studi vertono principalmente sulla letteratura tedesca del 1900 (in particolare George, Wolkfskehl, Hofmannsthal, Zweig), su questioni relative al saggismo novecentesco e alla "Kunstreligion", sull'estetica del 1700 (Schiller, Herder) e del 1900 (Klages, Wolters, Warburg).
Specifici campi di indagine attuali sono: l'opera dello scrittore e drammaturgo Botho Strauß, il rapporto tra letteratura e antropologia ("literarische Anthropologie"), letteratura e metropoli.
