I’m a linguist of Mandarin Chinese. I investigate what is commonly known as Mandarin (i.e., the contemporary official language of Mainland China, Taiwan, and Singapore) from different perspectives, mostly in the area of discourse analysis and conceptual metaphor theory. I’m particularly interested in the way meaning is created and conveyed, both intralingually and across different languages. My focus is on Chinese legal language, i.e., the language of laws, regulations, and private legal documents. In my most recent publications I explored the metaphors used in Chinese and English for key legal concepts, such as ‘legal rights’ (權利) and ‘injustice’ (冤). Presently I’m working on refining a procedure of identifying linguistic metaphors in Chinese, and I’m moving to the analysis of the metaphorical language of emotional discourse. I’ve carried out research in various internationally-established institutions, including the Academia Sinica of Taipei, Taiwan (中央研究院). My memberships include the European China Law Studies Association (ECLS, 欧洲中国法研究协会) and the Association for Researching & Applying Metaphor (RaAM).
