Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- recognize the main syntactic features of the German clause
- compare a Standard German sentence with a Non-Standard one (both Germanic and Romance will be taken into account)
- give a detailed account of the main syntactic phenomena of the German Language

Syllabus

Modern Linguistics aims at determining the structural similarities that different languages display at an abstract level. In the Generative framework, dialects and non-standard varieties turn out to be crucial to understand standard languages. After a brief summary of the well-known phenomena of the German Language (Verb Second, Verb Final and the structure of the complementizer) the relevant aspects of Bavarian will be introduced in this course; in particular, the so-called Doubly filled COMP will be taken into account.
