The course focuses on Russian literary and cultural area, with special attention to Russian history of the last two centuries. The main aim is to give the students those historical and methodological knowledges that can let them be able to read analytically and to interpret artistic phenomena, relating them to their socio-cultural context and understanding their relevance. At the end of the course, students must be able to deal with a semiological and comparative analysis of the cultural and artistic phenomena focused during the course and to value them, showing an autonomous judgement.
«Soviet Rock: Alternative Culture, Arts, Custom»
Soviet Rock was a cultural phenomenon that did not last so long (approx. it developed during the 70’s and 80’s of the 20th century); inspite of this, it reached a really fertile and great intensity inside the cultural panorama of the late USSR society. Rock began to represent a natural medium for social, cultural, philosophical and political instances which grew up among the youths, often in perypherical centres of the country, but it quickly overcame generational barriers and permeated the whole Soviet society in the last two decades of existence of the USSR. Thus the rock was one of the most sincere and characteristic voices of an alternative culture which would interpretate the crisis of Soviet rule with creative energy and a positive powerwill.
Among the topics that we examine: background of the rock in the USSR; authorial song in the 60’s; rock as a West expression and the growing of a “home” rock; organisation and geography of the Soviet rock; rock and youth trends; themes and styles of the Soviet rock between imitation and syncretism; Rock and Cinema.
An anthology of selected texts will be provided at the beginning of the course. Other materials will be uploaded on the e-learning platform.

Aims: the aim of the exam is to verify:
- The acquisition by the students of the basic space-temporal and conceptual coordinates learned in the course
- The appropriate knowledge concerning the topic and the instruments analysed during the course and/or planned in the programme
- The ability to value independently e with a full knowledge of the situation the peculiar historical, social and cultural phenomena of Russia, above all those ones concerning the period analysed in the course.
The exam will be about the contents included in the programme and about the literary, artistic and historic cultural materials analysed during the course.
Methods for conducting:
The exam is oral and is an interview during which the student must present with precision and showing the ability to judge independently about what has been learned during the course and the individual preparation. The programme is the same for both the attending and non-attending students: the last ones can find the necessary materials to study in the programme, in the lecture notes and on the e-learning internet page; they could ask for additional material or explanations to the professor during the office hours if needed.
