The course offers an introduction to German literature of the Twentieth century through the works of its most representative authors. By analysing thoroughly the readings, the course will provide students with the basic skills to read literary texts. Some of the texts will be read in German, so as to help students study German literary works in their original language.
This course is designed to equip students with critical skills for engaging with literary texts of various kinds.
The content of the course is divided into three main parts:
1) in the first part the students engage with narrative texts: Death in Venice by Thomas Mann, Metamorphosis, A Report to an Academy and Josephine the Singer, or the Mouse Folk by Franz Kafka
2) the second part deals with poetry (Rilke, Benn, Trakl, Brecht, Bachman, Celan)
3)the third part encourages students to engage critically and analitically with theatrical texts: we will study Brecht (Mother Courage and her children) and Dürrenmatt (The visit of the old lady)
The final exam will be oral and held in Italian.
It will also test the familiarity with the readings in German.
