“Historical fiction and the fiction of history”: historical fiction in 19th-century Britain
The course will investigate the role of historical narratives in romantic and victorian culture and literature, with special reference to the work of Maria Edgeworth, Jane Porte and Walter Scott. Their novels will provide a starting point for the exploration of the different ways of representing history in the 19th century.
