Historical fiction and the fiction of history”: historical fiction in 19th-century Britain
The course will investigate the role of historical narratives in romantic and victorian culture and literature, with special reference to the work of Walter Scott and George Eliot. The novels in the reading list will provide a starting point for the exploration of the different ways of representing history in the 19th century.
The course will focus on two novel in particular. Students are encouraged to read them before the beginning of the course.
