Module: The first module of the course will introduce the students to the prose writings of Franz Kafka, in particular his novel The Trial (Der Prozeß). This work deeply influenced Twentieth century imagination stimulating relevant political and philosophical debates. The analysis of the completed chapters, as well as of the parts which have remained incomplete, will lead to the discussion of the main topics of the novel (law and literature, state of exception, totalitarianism and bureaucracy, guilt and shame, etc). The course aims at demonstrating how, after almost one hundred years, the novel still exerts a provocative effect.
