Shakespeare and Anglo/Italian Relations | The research project involves a study of Anglo/Italian relations from the beginning of the sixteenth century to the end of the seventeenth century by analyzing exemplary authors and contexts. For instance, the artistic context in Shakespeare will be examined in association with the role played by that "rare Italian master", Giulio Romano and his "school" of painters in Europe, some of whom worked for Henry VIII at Nonsuch Palace. Within the artistic context of Shakespeare's works (plays, poems, The Winter's Tale, The Rape of Lucrece, etc..), research will reconsider the visual culture of the Mannerist painters that was widespread among the aristocratic elite in England, while treatises and pamphlets dealing with art theory and artistic techniques were being translated from Italian (mainly) into English, thereby also inventing a new linguistic code, besides catering to Italianate fashions.Translations from Italian into English, as well as eye-witness accounts from English travelers to Italy (Hoby), or Italian gentlemen living in England (Castelvetro) brought about innovative changes in both civilizations. Estimated costs: 10.000 euros. |
