Andrea Padovan specializes in German Linguistics. Specifically, his research focuses on gaining a better understanding of the syntax of Germanic minority languages spoken in Northern Italy. Andrea Padovan's work explores language contact between standard language and non-standard varieties delving into the phenomenon known as 'language obsolescence'. The research seeks to understand how a language "shrinks" when the number of speakers dwindles significantly, which in turn leads to increasingly limited opportunities for language use. Another research area involves examining verb complexes (auxiliaries + modals + lexical verbs) in both standard German and regional varieties, from a formal syntactic perspective (Minimalism vs Tree Adjoining Grammars).
