This course is aimed to introduce students to topics related to the global spread of the English language and its diversification, with specific reference to World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF).
During the course we will discuss reasons and consequences related to the development and spread of English at a global level. During the course we will examine concepts related to language variation in World English and ELF (Standard language ideology, native / non-native speakers of English, L2 users), as well as models of categorization for the spread of English. Exemplifications will be illustrated both for World Englishes and English as a Lingua Franca.
