Short description of contents:
This paper investigates the presence of representations of World Englishes, English as an International Language (EIL) and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) in a corpus of upper secondary school EFL civilisation textbooks in the Italian educational context. Research in the field of WEs, and in the last decade of ELF, has largely shown that the English language has developed into a plurality of Englishes, which is starting to be acknowledged also in ELT materials. Despite the prominence which is still given to the Inner Circle, data from our corpus testify that ‘New Englishes’ are increasingly being included, as well as recognition for the role of English as an international language and lingua franca of communication, though often with reference to its global spread rather than in connection to research on ELF.
