Internationalisation
Internationalisation has always been in the DNA of the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures and is a fundamental dimension of our teaching, research and educational activities.
Student Exchange Programmes
The Department promotes the outgoing and incoming mobility of students in the context of the University's international mobility programmes through an extensive network of international partnerships with universities in Europe, Africa, America, Asia and Australia under the Erasmus+ programs for Study, Erasmus+ Traineeship, Worldwide Study programme, and through individual mobility projects.
Research
The Department promotes the creation of international research networks in the context of innovative projects for the enhancement of linguistic and literary heritage for the contemporary world, encouraging the presence of visiting professors and researchers from partner universities. As a result of the excellence of its research activities, the Department has been funded for two consecutive times by the Ministry of Research under the multi-year projects of excellence: "The Digital Humanities Applied to Foreign Languages and Literatures" (2018-2022) and "Inclusive Humanities" (2023-2027), totalling more than 13 million euros.
The Department offers two PhD programmes, in Foreign Languages and Literatures and in Linguistics, aiming to train students to actively participate in international research from an interdisciplinary, multicultural and multilingual perspective. The PhD Programme in Foreign Languages and Literatures is divided into a track on Foreign Literatures and Cultures and a track on Foreign Languages and Translation. It has signed numerous co-tutorship agreements with European and non-European universities (France, Spain, Germany, and Canada). The PhD programme in Linguistics promotes research focusing on language contact, German and Romance dialects, minority languages and multilingualism in close cooperation with the universities of Bolzano and Marburg, constituting an inter-university and international course. Half the 20 active Linguistics PhD students have dual co-tutorship agreements with European universities (outgoing and incoming: Germany, Norway, France).
Teaching
The Department encourages the development of the international dimension to teaching by promoting the creation of Double Degree programmes. It offers a double degree programme with the University of Marburg as part of the PhD in Linguistics, and with the Universidade da Coruña as part of the Master's Degree in Languages, Literatures and Digital Culture. In order to further this aspect, in particular, the Department actively encourages new partnerships for international cooperation projects at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
