Learning outcomes

The course offers a detailed description and illustration of the main linguistic, philosophical, poetical theories, from De Saussure to Jakobson, to Heidegger and Derrida, which make up the methodological foundation of the practice of translation. All translation theories have reached us through a historical tradition which proves that translation has always been practiced. From the myth of the fall of the Tower of Babel onwards, translation has developed in a diachronic way, through important, fundamental stages, marked, in particular, by the transmission of major texts from one culture to another, and, as far as the course is concerned, from classical languages to Italian and English. The great books of the history of translation in Western civilization are Homer, Virgil, the Bible, Dante, Petrarch, Medieval Italian novellas, Shakespeare, etc.. just to mention a few examples..

The 24 lessons of translation studies will deal with the following topics:

13. Translation Studies as an academic subject; the translator as interpreter, mediator, etc.
14. Translation and Linguistics: De Saussure
15. Translation and Communication: Jakobson
16. Contemporary theories: Lefevere, Bassnett, Toury, Venuti, Berman
17. Translation and post-colonial studies; Translation and “gender studies”
18. Stages in the process of translation from L1 (“source language”) to L2(“target language”): examples and practical application
19. Methodology of translation: applied to the chosen text.
20. Significant examples of diachronic/synchronic translation
21. Comparing and evaluating/assessing translation: equivalence
22. Translation and tradition (Heidegger)
23. Untranslatability. Problems in translation
24. Music and translation. Translating poetry.

Assessment methods and criteria

It is an oral and written exam. Those students who cannot attend classes or the translation workshop are invited to see the teacher and prepare an alternative program.
