The course aims at making the student familiar with the main themes and theoretical issues characterizing colonial and postcolonial literatures in English. This is done through an in-depth analysis of representative texts that are studied in their textual dynamics through a wide diachronic view but with a special care for their specific contexts.
SYLLABUS
Growing up in the colony/postcolony
After introducing the discipline, this module will deal with the theme of the colonial/post-colonial subject’s construction/deconstruction of identity through the dynamics of mimicry, double bind, resistance and questioning of the cultural-ideological tropes of the imperial mythology and of the race and gender essentialisms feeding the colonialist imaginary. This will be done through an in-depth analysis of representative texts drawn from the Australian, Caribbean, and South-African contexts.
