The course of Romance Philology, through the reading and analysis of literary texts in various romance languages, will enable the student to acquire and develop important knowledge in the fields of philology, historical linguistics and literature. It will also enable the learner to refine his / her interpretation’s skills and understanding applied to literary texts and to elaborate important historical and cultural judgment. At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate that he / she can master the different levels of analysis that will be applied to the texts. The student must also demonstrate knowledge of the disciplinary vocabulary and exhibit the contents with language properties.
The course aims to analyse the novel Apollonius of Tire through medieval vernacular versions (Castilian, Libro de Apollonius, and French, The Roman of Apolonius de Tyr) until the rework of Shakespeare in Pericles Prince of Tire and "Marina" of T.S. Eliot. The main aim is to demonstrate the vitality of a story (originally in Greek but especially developed in Latin translations) through the centuries. The texts of the early Middle Ages will be privileged, but it will also be interesting to compare the Shakespeare’s comedy that is very much concerned with the mediation of the rewrite made by John Gower in Confessio Amantis.
The teaching methods involve frontal lessons. An introductory teaching activity is included: Introduction to the critical edition of vernacular texts (by Dr. Nicolò Premi, nicolo.premi@univr.it ) especially for those who have never took philology exams.
