Learning objectives
By the end of the seminar, PhD students will be aware of the specific structural characteristics that make political discourse and its sub-genres a pivotal example of argumentative discourse with the practical examination of some case studies

Program
The seminar will first introduce the structural characteristics of political discourse and political speeches with special reference to argumentation. Then, it will focus on persuasion, manipulation and propaganda in political discourse examining several theoretical frameworks including George Lakoff’s framing analysis and Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive discourse.
The class will include a theoretical part and the examination of some case studies based on several political discourse sub-genres and focusing on such topics as the Russia-Ukraine war, covid-19, and discriminatory discourse.

PhD students must obtain a specified number of CFUs each year by attending teaching activities offered by the PhD School.
First and second year students must obtain 8 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 5 CFUs; free choice activities provide 3 CFUs.
Third year students must obtain 4 CFUs. Teaching activities ex DM 226/2021 provide 2 CFUs; free choice activities provide 2 CFUs.
