Learning outcomes

The lecture aims at:
- introducing the audience with the current state of studies on the representation of the Other in cinema, with a particular focus on the representation of Russians in the American movies;
- providing the audience with comparativo pragmalinguistic tools;
- promoting discussion on the interplay between linguistic representation and the creation of the stereotype of the Other

Syllabus

The lecture opens with a short analysis of some American movies since WWII onwards, in which the Russian heroes are represented according to prototypical stereotypes in relations with different geopolitical scenarios.
In particular, the analysis will focus on the Russian characters' language and their use of discourse-pragmatic features. Some prototypical characteristics of them can be read in the light of the Politeness Theory, leading to the construction of linguistic-based cultural stereotypes.
