The course aims to introduce the development of the English novel from the Victorian age to postmodernism. After a general presentation of the history of the English novel and of its characteristics in each period, three novels will be analysed in detail: Heart of Darkness, Lord of the Flies and The French Lieutenant’s Woman.

W. Golding, Lord of the Flies (1954)
J. Fowles, The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1969)
Critical texts:
• D. Carpi, L’ansia della scrittura, Liguori: “Premessa”, “Introduzione” and chapters on Golding and Fowles.
• All the materials (essays, slides…) uploaded on the elearning website throughout the semester
