HAMLET and TORRISMONDO. SHAKESPEARE and TASSO




In an intensive group study of Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy and Tasso’s “Northern” play, students learn methods for reading and analyzing the texts while examining their cultural and historical contexts. Class work will focus on a comparative reading of the two great Cinquecento tragedies, on the differences and similarities between characters, references, plots, poetical style, and language.

Syllabus

History of English Literature: Elizabethan and first Stuart periods (1558-1625) to be studied on any good textbook (Praz, Sanders), or Website.

Torquato Tasso, Il Re Torrismondo, in Teatro, ed. M. Guglielminetti, Milano, Garzanti, 1983, pp. 99-251

Critical Texts:

R. Severi, Rinascimenti. Shakespeare &Anglo/ \Italian Relations, Bologna, Patron, 2009:
chapters: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,8, 9,10, 14,15,16.
Non-attending students must also study: S. Greenblatt, Will in the World. How Shakespeare Became Shakespeare, London 2005.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam is both written and oral and the written test must be passed before being admitted to the oral session.
Attendance is highly recommended.

All students must come to the exam session with their textbooks. No photocopies are allowed
