Drawing on theories of the nation and of the historical novel the course aims at investigating the role of historical fiction in the (de)construction of national/regional identities in 19th-century British and Irish literature by focusing on three canonical texts. The course will also provide a broad contextualization of the above works in the cultural and literary history of 19th-century Britain.
