Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing the students to the Spanish literature and culture of the XVIth century.

Syllabus

“The others, the persecuteds, the different ones and the misfits in the Imperial Spain”
The course will be about the Spanish culture and literature of the XVIth century, deepening particularly the literature about the other, the persecuteds (heretics, conversos, moriscos), the different ones (prostitutes, witches) and the misfits (picaroons) in the Hapsburg Spain from a contemporary perspective (F. Delicado’s La Lozana Andaluza) and a current one (M. Delibes’El Hereje). It will be divided in two parts: the first part will provide a cultural and historical introduction, un’introduzione storico-culturale, whereas the second one will deal with the critical and literary matters specific of the (auto)biographical and genre-fiction of the Golden Age. The students have to prepare both the parts.
1th PART: – Culture and society of the XVIth century Spain
Bibliography:
- M. CAMARERO, R. NAVARRO, F. PEDRAZA, T. PÉREZ VIEJO, Antología comentada de la Literatura española. Historia y textos. Siglo XVI, Madrid, Editorial Castalia, 2006.

- HELEN RAWLINGS, L’Inquisizione spagnola, Bologna, il Mulino, 2006.
All the texts are also avaiable at the library of the Romance Philology Department.
2nd PART: “The others, the persecuteds, the different ones and the misfits of the Imperial Spain”.

- FRANCISCO DELICADO, La Lozana andaluza, Madrid, ed. de Claude Allaigre, Madrid, Cátedra, latest edition.
- Anthological extracts from the Antología comentada de la Literatura española. Historia y textos. Siglo XVI (they will be indicated during the course by the teacher).
It will be shown during the course the M. Forman’s film Goya –The Last Inquisitor (2006) with Javier Bardem and Natalie Portman.

Deepening readings:
During the classes, and/or on demands of the students, deepening readings about the treated subjects will be recommended by the teacher.

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination procedure will consist in an oral examination almost completely taken in Spanish language (save for the Italian bibliography). An evaluation of the degree of comprehension (reading and translation) of the texts written in Spanish will be also provided and a convenient linguistic competence will be required. A possible intermediate examination might be planned during the course for the attending students. Even if the programme for the no-attending students is the same, it would be better to consult the teacher before.
