PhD in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures

Course partially running (all years except the first)

Overview

In the wake of the most recent trends in theoretical and methodological approaches, the PhD in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures aims to promote the integration of linguistic, literary and cultural studies in order to build critical awareness of the multicultural and multilingual reality of Europe and of the world, as well as the ability to act upon such reality. This PhD programme is designed so that students can acquire theoretical, methodological and applied competence in the single fields of the PhD programme. Specifically, PhD students will acquire methodological and theoretical tools suitable for their own research, to be conducted in various cultural and professional fields relating to both European and non-European linguistic, literary and cultural studies. Critical theory contributions will enhance an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach while providing the necessary tools for a constant update of aesthetic and historical interrelations. Hence, the PhD programme will foster a closer investigation into the relationship between text – both literary and non-literary – and context, and between literary and non-literary works and their relative linguistic knowledge. This approach makes the PhD programme in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures the ideal setting for different languages and cultures to meet and interrelate. Frontier cultures will be given proper recognition. The different languages in the programme (English, German, Spanish, French and Russian) will be analysed both synchronically and diachronically, with a special focus on their variations and varieties. The wide range of research opportunities and methodologies will foster the acquisition of knowledge and skills to be exploited in national and international settings at a highly scientific as well as professional level in the fields of media, literary translation studies and cultural mediation, and also in foundations, archives, libraries and public institutions.
