The paper tackles the issue of text complexity in political discourse, with special reference to election speeches and presidential addresses, and is set within the framework proposed by Merlini-Barbaresi (1988, 2003 and 2004) on text complexity and markedness. Our aim is to examine the main elements and discourse structures characterising political speeches, and observe how the different parameters, perspectives and discourse levels, interact in this discourse framwork, in an attempt to assess its overall level of complexity.
