Dottorato in Lingue e Letterature Straniere - 38° ciclo (1 ottobre 2022 - 30 settembre 2025)

PhD student in Foreign Languages and Literatures.

My project proposes to investigate the relevance of Aristotle’s Politics in the Elizabethan and early Jacobean cultures and its impact on the commercial theatres in the early 1560s, i.e. at the time of Thomas Smith’s composition of De Republica Anglorum; in the 1580s and 1590s, when I.D.’s vernacularisation of Aristotle was published and in the following decade; finally, at the political transition between Elizabeth and James I in the early seventeenth century. The project will focus on an analysis of the historical and cultural relevance and diffusion of Smith’s and I.D.’s presentations of Aristotle’s political thought and its impact on contemporary literary and theatrical works. This will help reconsider current interpretations of political drama concerned with controversies about monarchical rule and ideas of commonwealth at a time of growth and self-affirmation of England as, in Smith’s words, a “different” country from all the rest.
