Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to provide students with:
- a basic knowledge of the history of the British Empire
- a basic knowledge of postcolonial theories

At the end of the course students will be able to:
- discuss the selected literary texts through the critical theories introduced in the course
- discuss in English, in a clear and consistent way, the topics dealt with in the course

Syllabus

"Modern diasporas and the representations of immigrants in Anglophone literatures"

The course will explore, through the analysis of three literary texts focusing on different cultural and historical contexts (Pakistan/US, imperial India, Sudan/Egypt/Scotland), and through the lens of postcolonial and diaspora studies theories, the problems related to the representation of the “Other” as im/migrant.

The course will be taught in English.

Students will have to register with the elearning website and download class materials on a regular basis.

This programme will be valid for two years (until January/February 2022)

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam in English, which will assess:
- a knowledge of primary and secondary texts
- the ability to articulate effectively the information and critical assessments concerning texts and topics discussed in class

Students attending the course will be given the possibility to take a written test (multiple choice) at the end of the course, counting as a part of the whole exam. For further information see the first powerpoint presentation in the webclass.
