Learning outcomes

The course aims at introducing and consolidate a metalinguistic knowledge of English phonetics and morphology.

Prerequisite: B2 level

1. MORPHOLOGY
- functional and lexical words/parole funzionali e lessicali
- morphemes/morfemi
- inflectional morphology and allomorphy/morfologia flessiva e allomorfismo
- derivational morphology and allomorphy/morfologia derivazionale e allomorfismo
- common affixes in English/affissi comuni in inglese

2. PHONETICS
- The International Phonetic Alphabet/l'alfabeto fonetico internazionale
- speech organs/organi articolatori
- vowels and consonants/vocali e consonanti
- voicing/ sonorizzazione (sorde, sonore)
- place of articulation/luogo di articolazione
- manner of articulation/modo di articolazione
- primary stress in words and compounds
- intonation and prosody/intonazione e prosodia

3. VARIETIES OF PRESENT DAY ENGLISH
- Main varieties of Present-day English/principali varietà dell'inglese contemporaneo

Assessment methods and criteria

Prerequisite B2 level of competence of the English Language (certificate)

WRITTEN EXAM (B2 level is a prerequisite required to access the exam)

The final exam consists of exercises that refer to phonetic and morphological aspects of the English language. The main topics of the final exams are:

- inflectional morphology and allomorphy;
morfologia flessiva e allomorfismo
