Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:
- illustrate and exemplify the most important features of German in its historical stages;
- analyze simple texts with respect to the phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexical level for every stage;
- translate simple Middle High German texts;
- interpret language change as result of the effect of general linguistic principles;
- relate the reflection about language history to the recognition of the historicity of all expressions of human culture;
- present results in oral and/or written form (give a talk; write a paper);
- demonstrate good command of important resources in historical linguistics.

Assessment methods and criteria

- Students who regularly attend classes: oral presentation ("Referat") during classes (50 %) and written examination at the end of the course (50 % of final grade).
-> "Referat": presentation of an era of German-language history.
-> Written examination: translation of a short Middle High German text; description and explanation of language-change processes in all subdisciplines of linguistics.
- Students who do not regularly attend classes: term paper (50 %) and oral examination (50 % of final grade).
-> Term paper: elaboration of a topic of German-language history. Please contact the professor before the end of the classes in order to define the topic of the term paper.
-> Oral examination: translation of a short Middle High German text; description and explanation of language-change processes in all subdisciplines of linguistics.
