Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide an overview on Spanish literature of the medieval and early Renaissance ages, as well as critical and philological methods for direct approach to the texts and their interpretation.

Syllabus

Spanish chivalric literature from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.
Topics:
Matter of France and Britain: origins, assimilation and first evidence in the Iberian Peninsula. The national epic and the Carolingian cycle. The origins of chivalric fiction prose in Spain: the birth of local models. The advent of printing and the spread of "libros de caballerías". Literary relations between Italy and Spain: the mutual influences from Fifteenth Century "cantari" to the "romanzi" of the Renaissance.
Texts and compulsory critical bibliography will be provided on the e-learning platform.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam in Spanish and optional written test .
