The course aims at helping students develop and expand their knowledge of the history of English with a focus on phenomena of language contact and language change and due consideration given to the role of social factors in the development of English across the centuries.
“The history of English from a sociolinguistic perspective”
The following historical periods will be considered:
-Early Modern English
-Late Modern English
-Present Day English
For each of these periods, we will discuss aspects related to: the social, cultural and political history, linguistic developments, dialectal variation, linguistic and literary achievements.
Barbara Fennell. 2001. A History of English. A Sociolinguistic Approach. Oxford: Blackwell (chs.1, 3, 4, 5, 6).
Gerry Knowles. 1997. A Cultural History of the English Language. London: Routledge.
The course will be held in English.
Oral exam in English.
Types of questions: questions on theoretical issues covered in the course and on related metalinguistic knowledge.
Criteria of assessment: correctness and completeness of the answers, clarity of argumentation, analytical skills, critical and reflective thinking, usage of the appropriate jargon.
