This course introduces to some voices and aspects of modern and contemporary French literature in order to develop critical readings of relevant literary texts in relation to social, economic and artistic changes in the recent history of French culture.
At the end of this course, students shall therefore acquire knowledge in French cultural history, along with the capacity of applying this knowledge to critical readings of relevant literary texts concerning the identitarian, relational, historical, cultural, social and ecomonical issues the course deals with.
New forms of engaged realism in French contemporary prose.
In the context of contemporary French literature's so-called 'new realism', several kinds of writing (reports and portraits, journals and testimonies) intertwine documentary and imaginary elements in order to question relational, social, economic and political issues (Didier Daeninckx, Annie Ernaux, Jean Hatzfeld, Jean Rolin, and many others). Aspects such as popular culture, migration, marginality and deindustrialization will be approached through the work of François Bon (Sortie d'usine, Daewoo, Décor ciment, L’enterrement, Parking, Paysage fer, Prison, Rolling Stones e Un fait divers, alongside his literary and theatrical workshops as well as his web site www.tierslivre.net).
For an overview, see Dominique Viart, Bruno Vercier, La littérature française au présent: héritage, modernité, mutations, Paris, Bordas, 2005, pp. 205-262.
A detailed program with a choice of literary and critical texts will be given at the beginning of the course.
The course is held in Italian (texts in French).
Students unable to attend the course are invited to contact the teacher.
Optional mid-term paper (students will be requested to comment on one of the literary texts the course deals with) and oral exam (requested full text, anthological and critical readings).
