Expressionism is one of the most representative movements of the European avant-guard of the early 20th century. Between 1905 and 1925 (in particularly between 1910 and 1920), Expressionist artists articulated a radical criticism of society and created a very innovative aesthetics, which was based both on a cult of the ugly and introspection, the crisis of the individual, anxiety and madness as well as on the confrontation with the metropolis, industrialisation, the acceleration of rhythms of life and with war. This course aims at introducing this artistic sensibility by putting it into the context of German literature and culture of the 20th century.
