PhD Scholarship: Studies on Chinese Vernacular Lexicography in Ming and Qing dynasties

Appendix to the Call for applications for admission to the PhD programme in Foreign Literatures, Languages and Linguistics, XXXV cycle, academic year 2019-2020

The research fellowship is aimed at the development of a project on the practices of late imperial vernacular lexicography, starting from the analysis of a selection of lexicographic sources compiled during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, supplemented by the examination of lexicographic materials retrievable from coeval sources and the investigation of occurrences in historical-literary sources.

The successful applicant is expected to develop an individual research on the topic of the main research project and to write a PhD. dissertation focused on the analysis of at least one primary lexicographic work and its lexicon.

The successful applicant must hold a master’s degree in Chinese Language, Chinese culture or related fields. Very good command of oral and written Chinese language is required. Good knowledge of classical and literary Chinese is preferable at the time of admission. In any case the successful candidate is expected to acquire excellent command of the classical and literary language during the early stage of the Ph.D. program.

The selection procedure will be conducted in English and in Chinese. No prior knowledge of Italian language is required.   
The fellowship covers a three year period, extensions beyond three years are possible, without a fellowship. The starting date for the appointment is 1 October 2019.
