PhD Scholarship in Linguistics: Cooperation University of Verona (UniVR) and University of Tromsø (UiT)

Appendix to the Call for applications for admission to the PhD programme in Foreign Literatures, Languages and Linguistics, XXXV cycle, academic year 2019-2020

One of the fellowships offered at the University of Verona as part of the Ph.D. Programme in Foreign Literatures, Languages and Linguistics, 'Linguistics' track, is reserved for the cooperation established between the University of Verona (UniVR), Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, and the University of Tromsø – The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), Department of Language and Culture.

To apply for this specific fellowship, candidates have to indicate in their application 'Linguistics Track' and 'Cooperation with the University of Tromsø'. Applications can be uploaded to the dedicated website of the University of Verona indicated in the call for positions. Selection procedures will be in English, no prior knowledge of Italian is required.

The fellowship covers a three year period, extensions beyond three years are possible, without a fellowship, in the limits of the Individual Co-tutoring agreement between the cooperation partners. The starting date for the appointment is 1 October 2018.

The purpose of the PhD Research Fellowship is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral dissertation to be defended publicly. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD programme in Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at the University of Verona and the CASTL graduate school at the University of Tromsø.

Once employed, the successful candidate will have the possibility to specialize in the areas of phonology, syntax, multilingualism, minority languages, dialectology/microvariation, diachronic variation, historical semantics and syntax, language contact, language acquisition, language processing and language pathologies/disorders/attrition. Ph.D. students can acquire competence in traditional methodologies (such as dialectological field work) as well as in laboratory based research (e.g. acoustic analysis of audio data) and experimental methodologies (e.g. ERP-related approaches, eye-tracking).

The successful applicant will write a thesis on a topic in any of the above areas under the main supervision of an tutor at the University of Verona and co-supervised by an expert at the University of Tromsø. He/she will spend at least 12 months of their PhD at the University of Tromsø . On successful completion of the PhD. programme, the candidate will be granted a degree both from the University of Verona and from the University of Tromsø.

Qualification requirements
The position requires a 2-year Master`s degree in Linguistics or a related discipline, or a foreign degree recognisable as equivalent.  In addition, he/she must be able to document proficiency in English equivalent to Norwegian Higher Education Entrance Qualification (currently C1: see  PhD Regulations UiT).
